My Oh My How The Gypsy Garden Grows

So here is my first Gypsy Garden almost 2 months after I planted from seed... the front row has collards, the second row has yellow squash, the third row has carrots and the fourth row has cow peas.... I did some harvesting today to remove some leaves that had some damage on them. I continue to use my homemade organic pesticide that I made (chile peppers, garlic and dishawashing soap) and it seems to be working well for me. I was reading in a book the other day that Lady Bugs are a beneficial insect to have in a garden... well I havent seen any as of yet, so I have been doing some research online to see where I can purchase some. They are very inexpensive. You can get like 1,500 lady bugs for 6 bucks! Love It!!! If you are interested in some for yourself just let me know.

This is my garden cart that was purchased at a yard sale for $5.oo
It holds all of my tools and pots! Thanks to my Mom for her "Special Find Eye"

Gypsy Garden Grows.......

In the first garden, the one on the left... I have grown collard greens for the "good ol southern girl in me", yellow squash who like to spread out... carrots and cow peas.
In the second garden I have radishes, turnips, lettuce and cabbage.. mmmmm..yummy!
You can do this.. whether it is a small garden or a large.. if it's in containers or on a window sill..the reward is so gratifying. I can't wait to serve my family our first home grown organic veggies... :-)

My Roses

Roses are one of my favorite flowers... they bring me alot of joy!

Sunday, April 5, 2009

This is my second Gypsy Garden... the babies are about 12 days old.... I planted cabbage, radishes, lettuce and turnips.. everything in my garden that I have used to begin has all been found. What I mean is that all wood for building the boxes and sticks that I have used to make signs for each veggie and many other odds and ends have all been found! It's all about being frugal there is no need to go out and spend tons of money. The point is to be smart and begin to think in terms of being creative and enjoying the fruits of your labor.

INFORMATIVE WEBSITES

Check out this amazing website that will really inspire you to start your own garden..... get creative and do your own thing.... use the information she gives you to create what works for you. http://www.gardengirltv.com/

On www.Youtube.com there is also another person that goes by "Produce Garden" (just type that in) he is from Australia and has alot of great tips on homemade pesticide and using things you find versus going out and spending to create your garden spaces or to begin your urban sustainable lifestyle. Check it out!

Another web based garden aid is www.Growveg.com it is a planning tool that helps you design your veggie garden and shows you how much space is required to group your plants. The site offers a free 30 day trial....

I personally like to take a more less fuss approach to things, which means I like to do my own thing... you know trial and error, it's how we learn. However, I do know that many people are more technical and need a format so these sites are really helpful and inspire as you as you cultivate you skills.
